Update, 15 Dec 2021: The Biden Administration has—for now—shelved plans to reopen the consulate in Jerusalem amid “strong pushback” from the Israeli government and from pro-Israel communities worldwide.
The Biden Administration plans to reopen the consulate to the Palestinians—in Jerusalem. While the administration calls it a “minor administrative” action, doing so would revive the deprecated former US policy of treating Jerusalem as if it is not an integral part of Israel. Such a move is unacceptable.
The three individuals in the Biden Administration responsible for this planned debacle, setting peace back by years, are Secretary of State Antony Blinken, his Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Israel and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr, and National Security Council Director for Israel–Palestine Affairs Julie Sawyer. We call on these three to immediately abandon efforts to open this illegal and illegitimate consulate and to instead consider a location in Ramallah or Abu Dis. By insisting on a location in Jerusalem, they are planning to divide and undermine Israel’s eternal capital of Jerusalem.
